Winter Wedding at Hraunfossar Waterfalls | Mid-January Wedding in Iceland

There’s something really special about getting married in Iceland in the middle of winter. The days are short, the light is soft, and everything feels a little calmer — and this mid-January wedding was a perfect example of that.

The day started with a relaxed morning getting ready, surrounded by close friends and family. There was plenty of laughter, a few happy nerves, and a proper toast (because getting married without a toast should probably be illegal). The bride and her bridesmaids kept things fun and casual in matching satin pajamas, which made for some great candid moments before the day really got going.

After everyone was ready, we headed out to Hraunfossar, one of the most unique waterfall locations in Iceland — and an amazing spot for a winter ceremony.

A Ceremony with Ice, Blue Water, and Winter Light

Hraunfossar is especially striking in winter. The water stays an unreal shade of icy blue, while the surrounding rocks and riverbanks are covered in snow and ice. It’s the kind of place that looks dramatic without needing any extra effort — perfect for couples who want something natural and scenic, but still accessible and easy to reach.

The ceremony took place right by the waterfalls, with the bride and groom surrounded by their closest people. Even in the cold, the atmosphere was warm — lots of smiles, a few emotional moments, and a relaxed vibe all the way through.

One of the best parts of winter weddings in Iceland is how the landscape becomes part of the story. The contrast between the snow, the dark lava rock, and the bright blue water gave us an incredible backdrop for portraits right after the ceremony.

A Beautiful Winter Wedding Location in Iceland

Hraunfossar is a great choice for a winter wedding because it’s scenic, not too crowded, and easy to combine with other locations nearby. And on a cold January day like this, it delivered everything: ice, color, texture, and that clean winter look that makes Iceland weddings so unique.

After the ceremony and portraits, the couple headed back to Reykjavík for a cozy evening dinner celebration. And to finish the day in the most Icelandic way possible, the northern lights decided to show up and put on a little show — a pretty perfect ending to an already unforgettable winter wedding day.

Here are a few highlights from the day.
